Its inclusion may draw the ire of many health professionals and scientists who view the non-acidic diet as just another celebrity weight loss fad, but that doesn’t mean that the foods contained in that diet shouldn’t be eaten. Obviously, more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are essential for better health.
Navigating this ocean of uncertainty is not an easy task. Symptoms associated with adrenal fatigue probably have multiple causes. Adrenal glands that are in balance produce adequate amounts of hormones to power us through the day. They are key regulators of glucose, insulin and inflammation, and play a major role in bone and muscle building, mood and mental focus, stamina, sex drive and sleep cycles.
Scientists in China have designed a cohort study to examine the interaction of genetics, biomarkers and environmental exposures with health metrics lead to chronic diseases. A validated questionnaire, along with a large battery of tests, has led them to develop a classification referred to as “suboptimal health.” This phase is essentially a step between optimal health and diagnosable illness or disease characterized by “the perception of health complaints, general weakness, chronic fatigue and low energy levels.”

The website of chiropractor and naturopath James L. Wilson, DC, ND, PhD, says that he coined the term adrenal fatigue in 1998 “to identify below optimal adrenal function resulting from stress and distinguish it from Addison’s disease.” As many other naturopaths have taken up the diagnosis, it has spread widely across the Internet. Wilson’s website notes that “conventional medicine does not yet recognize it as a distinct syndrome.”
Low adrenal function often relates to increase in belly fat with the increase demand of the stress hormone cortisol and glycogenesis to respond to stressful situations and triggering glucose to be released into the bloodstream to provide quick emergency energy. Not only do we have blood sugar handling difficulties, fatigue and depression but we often get thyroid dysfunction and hormone imbalances. The body systems all work together so if one gland as the adrenal glands start to be fatigued or dysfunctional, then the other systems in the body as the hormones and thyroid become impacted.

As with the cortisol test, your doctor should be looking beyond the reference ranges provided by the lab. In fact, these days it’s very common for someone to be diagnosed with mild hypothyroidism even if all their results are within the range.
Did you ever complete additional follow-up articles in addition to this one? I’ve been dealing with similar issues and performed the iris contraction test and experienced non-stop wavering. I reached out to my endocrinologist and she informed me that adrenal fatigue is not a medical diagnose and does not exist int he medical world. I’ve had thyroid tests done and all came back normal, yet I still have symptoms. Thanks!
The ACTH has the effect of stimulating your adrenal hormone output, just like it would if you were placed in a stressful situation. This test allows you to see the response of your adrenals to stress. If your cortisol exhibits a healthy spike higher (at least double in a blood test), your adrenals are probably in reasonably good shape. If the spike in cortisol is not so large, this suggests adrenal insufficiency.
Hi Jill. I have suffered from chronic back pain off and on usually low back or near the top of my hips in the back. This has been going on for about the last 6 to 7 years. The only type of Imaging my doctors have done is an x-ray, which only showed very very mild arthritis. I am 36 years old, 5 foot 8 in tall, 135 lb. I feel like I am not taken seriously by my doctors, because I am not elderly or overweight. All they tell me to do is take muscle relaxers or ibuprofen, or do all these different stretches including physical therapy. Nothing helps. I am wondering if adrenal fatigue could be to blame for this. I only drink one cup of coffee in the morning. But I do eat a lot of sugar, and have for years. Adrenals. Ahhhhhhh, how I wish I knew about these guys a decade ago before my doctor put me on steroids in my 20’s, which took away my pain but also destroyed my adrenals!!! It wouldn’t surprise me if almost everyone has adrenal fatigue in the day and age we live in. There’s different “levels” and/or severities of adrenal fatigue. I have had professional help in my diaginosis for adrenal fatigue by going to a naturopath doctor and I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Wilson’s book and supplements. They have put me on the road of recovery and I am so thankful. I was so sick with anxiety and insomnia that I had two separate times about 2 months apart where I was literally in bed for a week – which was horrible being a mom of 3 very young children. Thank God for my husband and family – I wouldn’t have been able to recover without their help and support! And thank God for Dr. Wilson!
Processed meats: An overload of protein can stress your hormones more than you might think, and the added hormones and lacking nutrition in conventional, processed meats (particularly red meats like beef and steak) can throw your system out-of-whack in quick succession. Blood or salivary testing is sometimes offered but there is no evidence that adrenal fatigue exists or can be tested for.[1][3] The concept of adrenal fatigue has given rise to an industry of dietary supplements marketed to treat this condition. These supplements are largely unregulated in the U.S., are ineffective, and in some cases may be dangerous.[3]
When Adrenal Fatigue was first diagnosed many of these tests did not even exist. To help provide a diagnosis, doctors developed a series of more physical tests that can be conducted quickly in a doctor’s clinic or at home. These tests are clearly much less accurate than the blood, saliva and urine tests mentioned above, and positive results may reflect other health problems besides Adrenal Fatigue. However they can be a useful diagnostic tool in combination with all the other evidence provided.
This book is a good place to start in getting your life back in balance in go-go world that is pushing us to extreme levels of stress everyday. It has helpful, specific steps one can take but it needs a bit of help in the area of achieving better sleep. Poor sleep exacerbates all the problems of a 21st century life and an over-stressed life leads to poor sleep. "Catch 22". Gradual depletion is an easy thing to ignore until suddenly we are on empty. Don't ignore this information.
This one is still hard for me – I don’t want to disappoint anybody and there is always more work to be done. But managing stress means creating space in your life to refuel, spend time with the people you love, and doing what you need to do for you and you alone. Don’t just pencil it in. It’s as important as anything else you do for your health, and maybe more so.
Fortunately, there’s an art and science to sleeping, and it’s actually quite easy to hack. A lot of people think sleep is about getting eight hours a night, but sleep quality is far more important than sleep quantity, especially when it comes to balancing your cortisol.[5]  In fact, people who sleep less than 8 hours a night tend to live longer.[6] I’ve been sleeping for five hours a night for the past several years, and my performance has only gone up.
