I was diagnosed with severe adrenal fatigue and have been under a naturopathic dr’s treatment for months and have improved somewhat. in the beginning when I crashed, my blood pressure was very low. Now that I am on the road to healing (and its such a long road), the bottom number of my blood pressure continues to rise until now it is almost always in the upper ’90’s. The top number has remained great. Have you heard of this before? I’m wondering what is causing my bottom number to rise and what I can do about it?
There are other reasons why doctors (and even some naturopaths) are unable to make a diagnosis of Adrenal Fatigue. The requisite lab tests are rarely covered by insurance, and are often difficult to interpret for an inexperienced doctor. We have become addicted to busyness as well as being overly connected due to our constant phone “notifications”, social media, text messages and emails. We need to take charge of our lives and take power to keep our adrenals healthy! Adrenal fatigue can wreak havoc with your life. In more serious cases, the activity of the adrenal glands is so diminished that you may have difficulty getting out of bed for more than a few hours per day. With each increment of reduction in adrenal function, every organ and system in your body is more profoundly affected. Changes occur in your carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism, fluid and electrolyte balance, heart and cardiovascular system, and even sex drive. Many other alterations take place at the biochemical and cellular levels in response to, and to compensate for, the decrease in adrenal hormones that occurs with adrenal fatigue.
The problem here is that if someone does not need florinef, and takes it anyways, it can result in higher blood pressure. But, for some, it can be incredibly helpful. There is also research that shows the benefits of florinef when it comes to speech anxiety. Because it helps with blood pressure, it can help with standing for long periods at a time. When you speak in front of a crowd, and you are standing, this can be a distraction that disappears when your blood pressure is lower.

Of course, that money trail is only part of the story. While the lack of patentable treatments for adrenal fatigue is a prime reason for medical science’s failure to recognize it (the pharmaceutical companies have no interest in conditions that offer no real possibility for profitability) there is also the issue of the restrictions placed on doctors by licensing boards and insurance companies. Today’s doctors are simply much more conventional and conservative in their approach to medicine, and rely on consensus rather than their own experience and knowledge. Laboratory results and tests are now the mainstay for almost all forms of diagnosis, and adrenal fatigue is notoriously elusive when it comes to those tests.

Hi Jill. I have suffered from chronic back pain off and on usually low back or near the top of my hips in the back. This has been going on for about the last 6 to 7 years. The only type of Imaging my doctors have done is an x-ray, which only showed very very mild arthritis. I am 36 years old, 5 foot 8 in tall, 135 lb. I feel like I am not taken seriously by my doctors, because I am not elderly or overweight. All they tell me to do is take muscle relaxers or ibuprofen, or do all these different stretches including physical therapy. Nothing helps. I am wondering if adrenal fatigue could be to blame for this. I only drink one cup of coffee in the morning. But I do eat a lot of sugar, and have for years. Less obvious but no less important stimulants may include anger, rage, arguing, hatred, loud music, fearful news and even movies full of suspense or violence. Other activities that may act as stimulants and must not be overlooked include vigorous exercise, sexual preoccupations, recreational drug use or other thrills. These often provide a temporary “high”, which is caused in part by the secretion of high amounts of adrenal hormones. However, over time, this weakens the adrenals and can eventually lead to adrenal depletion and insufficiency.
This test tells us which point along the Adrenal Fatigue pathway the patient might have reached. In the initial stages of a stress reaction both cortisol and DHEA will be high. But as the body begins to struggle to produce sufficient stress hormones, DHEA levels start to fall. Put very simply, this is because the stress hormone production ‘steals’ resources from the sex hormone production. Further on in the development of Adrenal Fatigue, cortisol levels will begin to drop too. So this ratio, combined with other tests and information, helps us to determine which stage of Adrenal Fatigue the patient has reached.
But Nieman says that many of these patients with generalized symptoms have “what I call ‘couch potato syndrome,’ meaning that people get deconditioned if they don’t exercise. [Others have] a disorder of modern life that could be called the ‘life is hard syndrome.’” Many people are in fact stressed to the point of not taking care of themselves. For these patients, the recommendations of naturopaths have value when they emphasize adopting a better lifestyle, such as eating a healthier diet, taking vitamins, getting enough rest, exercising, and eliminating some negative things from their lives.
