This test should be used along with the Free T4 test. While Free T4 measures the amount of unbound and available T4 in your blood, Total Thyroxine also includes the amount of T4 that is bound to carrier proteins (essentially held ‘in reserve’). Using this test together with the Free T4 test will tell you how much T4 is available for your body to use, and how much is being held in reserve.

The lack of a biological explanation can be disappointing. What can cause adrenal fatigue in someone so young? I’m in my early 20’s and I have major adrenal fatigue. I don’t have any caffeine. I never drink coffee or soft drinks. Then read on – I have good news! My husband and I recently took the kids on a much needed trip to the shore, and I managed to read up on adrenal fatigue and create a plan for my recovery. As you can see, there are a number of symptoms that might be related to other underlying disorders. Fortunately, the ways to combat these issues are very similar and will benefit your overall health. Interpreting the results correctly can be difficult for a physician without experience of Adrenal Fatigue. The reference ranges supplied by labs are so wide that they only flag up extremely low cortisol levels. So your doctor will need to look at the levels provided and make his or her own judgment. This is where the importance of using an optimal range, rather than the reference range, becomes clear.
Deficiencies in hormones like cortisol, DHEA, aldosterone, pregnenolone, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone and growth hormone are often missed or poorly treated because doctors have come to rely on standard blood tests that require an intact pituitary and hypothalamus for diagnosis and dosing of hormone levels. There is, however, severe hypothalamic and pituitary dysfunction with CFS, making the standard blood tests inadequate. In the early stages of adrenal dysfunction, cortisol levels are too high during the day and continue rising in the evening. My 21 year old son has been diagnosed with”idiopathic hypersomulence” after a sleep study showing no apnea or narcolepsy. He lived in a house that had several feet of water in the basement and had black mold on the windowsills of his bedroom. He’s living with us now, but he is so tired all of the time! On weekends, he’ll sleep til 4 p.m.He will sometimes come in from work and lay on the floor from exhaustion. I desperately want to help him. It takes a short time for your system and brain to realize the issue has been corrected. But, a great deal of relief had come quickly. Within hours I was only dealing with the fatigue from the two-week ordeal. On occasion, I have to go back for a treatment but it is quick and painless. Blood or salivary testing is sometimes offered but there is no evidence that adrenal fatigue exists or can be tested for.[1][3] The concept of adrenal fatigue has given rise to an industry of dietary supplements marketed to treat this condition. These supplements are largely unregulated in the U.S., are ineffective, and in some cases may be dangerous.[3]
One of the most difficult aspects of adrenal fatigue is the fact that medical science continues to avoid the subject. Despite their inability to diagnose many cases of extreme exhaustion without referencing adrenal function, there are many doctors who still stubbornly refuse to acknowledge the existence of this problem. That leaves patients with little choice other than to manage their own recovery program. The good news is that there is a wealth of information to be found in the many books on adrenal fatigue in the marketplace today.
Testing for Adrenal Fatigue can take several forms. First we have the standard hormone tests, which include testing for cortisol and various thyroid hormones. These are the tests that your medical doctor will likely give you. Then we have the tests more frequently used by integrative doctors or naturopaths – these tend to look at the ratios of various hormones and neurotransmitters, in order to get a better idea of how a patient is feeling. And lastly we have a set of more subjective physical tests, which were mostly developed in the early days of Adrenal Fatigue diagnosis.

Within the book’s more than 360 pages, the author covers virtually aspect of this dread ailment. He explains in great detail how the adrenals work in combination with other key systems in the body to maintain homeostasis and ensure sound health. He examines the symptoms that accompany this disorder, as well as how to differentiate normal momentary tiredness from the type of chronic exhaustion these patients must endure.
I first learned about cytokines years ago when I was dealing with Lyme. What many of us do not realize is that the stress response triggers inflammatory immune cells called Cytokines. These cytokines perform many jobs and one of them is to make your thyroid receptors less sensitive to thyroid hormones- meaning that you’ll need more thyroid hormone that usual to have the same impact! This is where things get tricky because your thyroid blood work (see Part I for the blood work labs to get), can come out perfect but you’ll still be seeing thyroid symptoms because if you’ve got thyroid resistance, you can have the correct levels of thyroid hormone in your blood but your cells are being deprived. Yikes, right? Your hormone in your blood is not getting into your cells where you need it so you’re not seeing an improvement in your symptoms and your blood work can look perfect.
Of course, that money trail is only part of the story. While the lack of patentable treatments for adrenal fatigue is a prime reason for medical science’s failure to recognize it (the pharmaceutical companies have no interest in conditions that offer no real possibility for profitability) there is also the issue of the restrictions placed on doctors by licensing boards and insurance companies. Today’s doctors are simply much more conventional and conservative in their approach to medicine, and rely on consensus rather than their own experience and knowledge. Laboratory results and tests are now the mainstay for almost all forms of diagnosis, and adrenal fatigue is notoriously elusive when it comes to those tests.

I dealt with adrenal fatigue before I developed Bulletproof. It was hard to figure out what was wrong because a lot of doctors didn’t (and still don’t) recognize adrenal fatigue as real. One big reason is that when your stress response is messed up, it affects so many parts of your biology that it’s hard to identify as adrenal fatigue, and even harder to study.
